Elemenschen™ is based on Personal Feng Shui Elements, which are based on the Chinese Solar Calendar.
The philosophy behind these Elements dates back to BCE 3300. It's all about balance in nature and can be applied to just about everything – from building design to colors of throw pillows.
While I've had a great time using this philosophy in Feng Shui for buildings, homes, and workspaces, my absolute favorite practice is applying it to human connection!
So, I'm passing the info along to you... I think you're gonna dig it.

The symbols of the Elements are actually a type of 5000-year-old binary code! It's some seriously advanced knowledge. No surprise that it resembles other ancient symbols such as the Sanskrit Dharma Wheel + Medicine Wheel of Indigenous Peoples of the American Plains.
Calculating your element
female at birth

If born between January 1st - February 3rd, subtract 1 from your birth year.

Add all the digits of your birth year until it reduces to a single number.

Add 4 to this single number. The result is your Element number.

If the result is 5, the Element becomes 8. (I explain why in the FAQs at the end)

Use the chart to see which Element you are based on your final number.
example:
A person born female at birth on 1/23/1985 would use 1984 then do the following equations:

1+9+8+4=22 › 2+2=4 › 4+4=8 ›› Mountain Earth

Based on your date of birth + sex at birth*
The Chinese Solar Calendar does not start on January 1 like Western Calendars. It's starts at a specific time during the day of February 4 – China time. If you were born in January or the first few days of February, your element will be from the previous year.

What about trans + non-binary folks?
When I first learned about Personal Elements, this was my first question. Sex at birth seems non-inclusive + potentially inaccurate. I went on my own hunt for answers and, much to my surprise, 100% of my transgender + non-binary friends aligned with the element of their sex at birth. I remain open to evolving, so if you have any productive insights to share about this, I'm all ears. No one knows you like YOU.
Why do 5's turn into 2's + 8's?
Each Element has a yin to its yang. That requires an even number of Elements to pair up. In Feng Shui, the 5 is technically the center of the wheel where the yin yang sign is. It's a neutral Earth Element, so it gets divided up between the other two Earth Elements. Females at birth become 8-Mountain Earth (yang), males at birth become 2-Mother Earth (yin).
Why do people born between January 1 - February 3rd use the previous year?
The Chinese Solar Calendar begins during a precise moment of the day (February 4th) in China. So, if you were born on February 4th in New York, it might already be the New Year in China... but it might still be the the Old Year. Technically, anyone born between February 3rd - February 5th falls into this ambiguous transition time. I recommend all people born February 2nd and earlier default to the previous year (since the Solar New Year hadn't technically started yet). Anyone born between February 3-5 can read into both profiles (their year + the year before) and see which one resonates best. Some people find this to be more accurate if someone else reads them and helps determine their true Element (we can get bias, lol).
